Fall & Winter Advice

Another New England winter is fast approaching. Here are some helpful tips and advice to help prevent accidents or damage.

The winter of 2014 was a major setback for the insurance industry. We all need to do our part to help prevent another year like this or we will all suffer the consequences. We have seen many policies cancelled as a result of claims that are preventable. Please be sure your property is well maintained!

  • Have your furnace or boiler cleaned to avoid dangerous blowbacks and remember to have your chimney cleaned annually to prevent a chimney fire
  • Prevent ice dams by inspecting the roof drainage system for clogged drains, gutters and down spouts. If you are prone to ice dams take preventative measure before the snow and freezing temperatures by installing insulation, flashing, and/or electric wires. If you have had a prior problem with an ice dam we suggest you strip back enough shingles to install at least two rolls of an ice and water shield.
  • Purchase a roof rake and keep snow off the roof as much as possible to avoid ice dams. Hire a contractor if you can’t do it yourself.
  • Keep in mind municipal law or ordinance regulations for sidewalks. Keep well stocked with ice melt, sand and the like to avoid falls and possible lawsuits
  • If you are a snowbird it is advisable to drain all water from your home before going south to prevent frozen or burst pipes. Do not rely on someone to check your house when you are away. We suggest installing a NEST or similar thermostat so you can monitor the temperature of your home while away.
  • Know how to turn off water valves in case a pipe bursts. Do NOT attempt to thaw frozen pipes by yourself
  • Never use a generator indoors, inside the garage or near the air intake of your home to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Never leave burning candles unattended. Keep fire extinguishers on hand and be sure everyone knows how to use them.
  • Be sure to drive at a reduced speed in the snow and ice and leave plenty of room between vehicles
When hiring a contractor be sure they are licensed and insured for the service they are providing. Ask for a Certificate of Insurance
